Llordą castle marks the beginning of the transition from military frontier castles to those for more residential use. In 1033, Arnau Mir de Tost and his wife Arsenda purchased the fortress from the Count of Urgell, Ermengol II, and started an intensive refurbishment, probably with the intention of establishing their residence there. Although this project was never consolidated, the transformation of the unit into a castle-palace was effective, and amongst other reforms included the strengthening of the wall with the construction of three towers and the enlargement of the area to be used as a dwelling.
