The Consorci del Montsec:

The Consorci del Montsec is a body created by the Catalan government to implement a regional development project in this area of Catalonia which, by taking advantage of its capabilities and potential, helps to redirect and improve its socioeconomic situation. The aim of the Consorci is to comprehensively develop the tourist, social and economic sectors of Montsec. Among other organisations, this initiative has involved 16 municipalities (11 in La Noguera and five in Pallars Jussà), the County Councils of La Noguera and Pallars Jussà, Lleida Regional Council and various departments of the Catalan government.

The Consorci del Montsec is currently working on two lines of action:

1- Starting up and subsequently promoting the Parc Astronòmic Montsec (PAM), made up of the Observatori Astronòmic del Montsec (OAdM) and the Centre d’Observació de l’Univers (COU). The PAM is equipped with the basic tools for research, training and outreach in the field of astronomy, which at the same time serve to galvanize the region's economy. In building the PAM, a whole series of preliminary studies and documents were taken into consideration, identifying Montsec as a unique location in Catalonia for setting up a centre of these characteristics.

2- The promotion of the Montsec region as a tourist destination by creating the Montsec brand. The aim of this is to showcase the region as a quality tourist destination by developing different actions and promotional campaigns in order to publicise the cultural and historical heritage and tourist attractions of the Montsec region as a whole.

Lines of action:

Its actions in the region include:

• Constructing the Observatori Astronòmic del Montsec (OAdM) and the Centre d’Observació de l’Univers (COU).
• Renovating the Montsec-Mur hostel.
• Restoring the Collegiate Church of St. Pere D'Àger.
• Enlarging the Isona Museum.

Promotion of tourism:

• Creating and introducing the MONTSEC brand image.
• Publishing leaflets and other tourist information material.
• Promotional actions, attending trade fairs and other events.
• Creating an ornithological tourism product.
